Shostakovich with David Kaplan and Jens Lindemann

Chamber Orchestra at St. Matthew’s
Dwayne S. Milburn, Music Director and Conductor
David Kaplan, piano
Jens Lindemann, trumpet
RUTTER: Suite for String Orchestra
SHOSTAKOVICH: Piano Concerto No. 1, Op. 35
DVOŘÁK: Serenade for Strings, Op. 22

This program puts the string orchestra in the spotlight, from folk-inspired warmth to biting twentieth-century brilliance. While British composer John Rutter is known primarily for his choral writing, his delightful Suite for String Orchestra highlights English folksongs in a similar vein as his countrymen Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughan Williams. Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 1 is part concerto, part chamber drama, part musical prank—by turns witty, sardonic, lyrical, and dazzling. Two Music Guild favorites, pianist David Kaplan and trumpeter Jens Lindemann, team up for this astounding tour de force. The concert concludes with Antonín Dvořák’s tuneful and beloved Serenade for Strings in E major.
