Bach, Bible and the Blues

Please join us for an afternoon inspired by the Three B’s–Bach, the Bible, and the Blues.
We open our program with J.S. Bach’s exquisite Double concerto for two violins, here performed in a brilliant arrangement for string trio. The bulk of the afternoon is devoted to works inspired by the Bible, including Maria Newman’s interpretation of the story of Ruth and Naomi, two refugees with undying loyalty and devotion to each other. The Bible and African-American music coalesce in the music of spirituals, here set for viola and piano, as well as the English composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s settings of spirituals for piano trio. And 100 years ago, American blues was taking the European continent by storm, enticing some of the greatest composers to incorporate it into their music. Bohuslav Martinu gives his Czech version of the blues, as well as tango and Charleston in his Three Sketches for piano, and Maurice Ravel burns the house down in his Blues from his Sonata for violin and piano. We hope you will join us for an afternoon of music and camaraderie.
