The origin story for Liszt’s Études d’exécution transcendante, S139 (Transcendental studies) goes back to 1825 when, still only 14 years old, he wrote Étude en douze exercices, S136. Twelve years later, he elaborated and published these fairly undemanding pieces as the highly virtuosic Douze Grandes Études, S137. Finally, in a comprehensive revision for publication in 1852, he modified some of the most extreme technical demands and added titles to 10 of the 12 pieces and the epithet “Transcendental” to the whole set. The Transcendental Études now stands as one of the most intricately wrought and varied monuments across the entire literature of Romantic piano music, ranging in scale from the brief Preludio to the grandiosely vehement Mazeppa and elaborately discursive Ricordanza, and in expressive textures from torrential virtuosity to rapturously delicate nature-painting.
